Nobody Likes Spam

How our anti spam features work - Our Mail Server includes heuristic features to deal with spam. A complex scoring sytems evaluates each email on a variety of criteria: Each email is given a score based on the above criteria. If the email scores high enough, it is considered spam. Once an email is considered spam, the subject line is tagged !!!SPAM!!! and is then delivered as usual.

We don't delete spam -because of "false positives". In some cases, email that is perfectly legitimate scores high enough to be heuristically considered spam. It may not have anything to do with the content of the email. For example, the email could have originated from a mail server that is "blacklisted" as a notorious origin of spam.

We deliver spam to where it's sent - again, because of "false positives". Later in this article, we will give you suggestions on setting up your own "spam" folder. We simply tag the subject line of suspicious email to enable you to make your own choices based on what is best for you.

Not all spam is identified as spam - for a couple of reasons You probably have noticed that spam usually contains words that are spelled incorrectly. This is an attemt to have key words slip under the radar to avoid being detected by spam filters. You may have also noticed that some spam is appended with random words to dilute heueristic scoring techniques.

Some Suggestions

Never purchase products advertised in spam - this is common sense but belongs at the top of the list.

Be realistic -you will never ELIMINATE spam. It is an unfortunate side effect of having an email address. The worst case is that you will be downloading and deleting spam. While spam is and inconvenience, it is not life threatening.

Don't unsubscribe -don't be fooled into thinking the spammers give a hoot about your privacy. Believe it or not, by using their "unsubscribe" link, you could be making matters worse. At the very least, you are confirming that your email address is valid. This makes their list more valueable. At worst, the "unsubscribe" link is actually a link that will download malicious software to your computer. Just delete the spam and get on with your life.

Use anti spam software -while we do not recommend or endorse any specific product, there are scores of anti spam software solutions out there. A word of caution. Buy from reputable firms. Believe it or not, some of the free downloadable anti spam products are in fact "Trojan Horses". They are malicious programs that spammers use to propagate even more spam using your computer!

Set up your own spam filter - since our built in spam filter tags the subject line with !!!SPAM!! it is easy to set up a filter at our server so that email tagged as !!!SPAM!!! is never downloaded when you routinely check your email. Instead it is deposited into a special folder on our mail server that you can manually check from time to time in case some legitimate mail was determined to be spam (false positives). Here's a step by step guide to set up a spam filter on our server:

How to Filter out !!!SPAM!!!

You will need to log into the web interface of our mail server. You will need to enter your email address for the User ID and of course you'll need your password.

Click here to log into our mail server

Once you are logged in:

From now on, when you check your email, you will not be downloading the messages that have !!!SPAM!!! in the subject line. As stated earlier, some legitimate email may get tagged !!!SPAM!!! so you should use the web interface to our mail server to check for email that has been moved to your spam folder since mail that is over 30 days old is automatically deleted from our server.
