Almendralejo is 59 kilometers southeast of Badajoz and 28 km. south of Mérida on the Ruta de Plata (Silver Route) in the direction of Seville. The city is in a rich agricultural region producing large crops of grapes, watermelons, honeydew melons and olives.

There are prehistoric stone ruins in the region, but the first settlement of Almendralejo was by Knights of the Order of Santiago around 1327
