Borana women a children live a very hard life.  The ladies in the photo above are at the Moyale, Kenya market trying to sell the milk from the animals so that they can get some money for flour, cooking fat, sugar and tea.

Most Borana women carry everything on their backs.

  • Milk to sell at the market,
  • Water for their families,
  • Firewood for cooking,
  • Babies while working.

However, some Borana women are fortunate enough to have a donkey.  Most women who have a donkey do not use the donkey to carry their personal items.  Rather, they use the donkey for hire and get payment for carrying other peoples things.

These 2 young girls are about 10 years old.  The big pile of rocks in front of them is their means of livelihood.  They  take big rocks and break them into smaller rocks.  Then they sell the small rocks to "town" people who are building houses with cement.  They haul the rocks from where they broke them to the place where they will sell them, on their backs.  These two girls carried this pile of rocks to our house in two trips.
