These donkeys on the left are at a “Singing Well” in

Ethiopian Borana Land.  The donkeys are used as pack animals and you seldom see them pulling carts.

For Hire

The photo above is a Borana woman named Maleecha and her donkey.  The donkey has 4 water cans that each hold about 5 gallons of water.  She buys a "donkey load" of water for about 10 cents and sells it for about 50 cents.  

If she has enough customers, her donkey can make 3 to 4 trips to the water hole and back in one day.  So she can make about $1.20 to $1.50 a day by hauling water with her donkey.  She is considered middle class among her tribe, neither poor nor rich.
