Traditionally the Borana are Animistic.
Animism (from Latin anima (soul,) commonly refers to the belief systems that attribute souls or spirits to animals, plants and other entities, in addition to humans.
In the last 100 years many Borana have come to claim one of the world's major religions, Islam. However, many of the people do not really understand the beliefs of Islam. They are Muslims in name only. They still practice their traditional religion. But, the Muslims have a goal to cover Africa with their religion.
One strategy they have in accomplishing this is to build as many mosques as possible. They will go into a region and build mosques when they have no one to attend them. They get people to claim Islam in name only and once they 2nd and 3rd generation is Muslim because their parents were Muslims, they send Imam's to the mosque to begin teaching the people what Islam believes.
When we moved to Moyale in 2001 we very rarely saw a woman dressed the way the woman is dressed in the picture to the right. But now you will see several dozen women dressed like this every time to go to town.
