Borana Men and Women distributing water near Moyale Ethiopia

Usually a woman will carry her jug of water tied to her back.  One jug holds 20 litres of water.  It weighs about 45 pounds.  Some will only have to carry water 2 or 3 miles, but many will carry it 5 to 10 miles.

One of the biggest issues for the Borana People is the lack of drinking water.  The picture above was taken near the Ethiopian side of Moyale town. The people are waiting for the delivery of water.  The jugs on the right will be used to carry the water.    (Of course, the bigger issue for the Borana people is not drinking water, but the lack of LIVING WATER.)

This is a series of photos taken of Borana people waiting for a delivery of water.  The water will come on a truck and the water wll be poured into a well.  The first photos are of them waiting with their jugs for the water, then filling of their jugs.

Despite the hard work ahead, when the water arrives it is a very exciting and happy time.  Imagine how exciting and happy they will be when they receive the "Living Water."

The borana woman on the right is dipping water from a seasonal water hole.  There are two rainy seasons in Northern Kenya.  In March and April  the "longs rains" come, which last about 6 weeks.  In October/November the "short rains" come, which last about 4 weeks.  There is virtually NO rain in between these two "rainy seasons."  During the "rainy seasons" there will be run-off water in these holes.

If the rains are plentiful, the water will remain in the larger holes for as long as 1 to 2 months.  After the "long rains" they wait for 5 months for the rain to come again. Ater the "short rains" they wait for rain for 4 months.  So for many months each year these water holes are dry.
