Reaching the Mestizos of the Central Andes
Mestizos, (Mes-TEE-sohs) - In Ecuador,
these are people of
mixed Indian and European ancestry. When their ancestors were
defeated by the Spaniards, they were forced to convert
to Catholicism.
They are a racial and social
mix, and the religion they
practice
is a blend of
Catholicism and traditional
beliefs. They do not understand that Christ paid the
debt for their sins. A burden of guilt forces them to
perform endless rituals in an effort to pay the price
for their sin.
